Godha Stuthi - 15

aamOdhavathyapi sadhA hrudhayangamAapi
rAgAnvithAapi lalithAapi guNOttharAapi
MouLisrajA tava Mukhundha kirITa bhAjA
GodhE! bhavathyadharithA khalu VaijayanthI

MEANING:
Oh GodhE! The famous garland Vyjayanthi worn by Your Lord is indeed full of
fragrance. It is desired by Him and hence given a prominent place on His chest. It is
indeed constructed from tender forest flowers, which never fade. Inspite of all these
glories, it is worn on the chest and not on Your Lord's head over His KirItam (Thiru
AbhishEkam). The garland that You wore and presented to the Lord is accepted by
Him with joy and worn with love on His KiriTam (sarvEsvara Chinnam) to
demonstrate Your garland's superiority over Vyjayanathi maalai. Your Lord's respect
by wearing the garland worn by You earlier at a high place (over His crown) indicates
His affection and reverence for it over the Vyjayanathi maalai.

Introduction:

In the last Paasuram, Aandal woke up a girl who had earlier told others that she will lead everyone and wake everyone up. In this Paasuram, she tries to wake up a girl who is very interested in being with the rest of the group.

This Paasuram is rendered in such a way as a conversation between the girl sleeping inside and the girls waiting outside.

But before, there was a request yesterday to explain "Pankayakkannanai/பங்கயக்கண்ணானை" from one of the reader and I have added the explanation for that in yesterday's post at the end.

There was also a question from the same reader on where in the Paasuram was it mentioned about "Saiva Sanyasis"!! Good question, and such question makes it more interesting to write more about Thiruppavai. Gives more encouragement.

The question is as follows:

Why do you call Saiva sanyasis? Where does it mention demigod worship?

Regarding Saiva Sanyasis:
The line in the Paasuram "Sengal podi kooRai veNpal thavaththavar thangaL thirukkovil sangkiduvaar poogindraar" / "செங்கல் பொடி கூறை வெண்பல் தவத்தவர் தங்கள் திருக்கொயில் சங்கிடுவார் போகின்றார்".

These lines indicate that it is already morning to the girl who is still sleeping inside the house by those who are trying to wake her up from outside the house. In this "thavathavar/தவத்தவர்" is the word for which our Poorvacharyas have rendered Vyakyanam as Saiva Sanyasis.

This is mentioned in moovaayirappadi/மூவாயிரப்படி, aaraayirappati/ஆராயிரப்படி, iiraayirappadi/ஈராயிரப்படி and naalayirappadi/நாலாயிரப்படி vyakyanams.

In the lines, sengal podi koorai means, the saffron dhothi/காவி உடை. thavathavar/தவத்தவர் means sanyasis. thangkal tirukkovil/தங்கள் திருக்கோவில் means temple of Saivas. Here our Poorvacharyas indirectly call this as "demi god" the temples of shiva etc., who are as per Vedhas are created by Sriman Narayana. And since they are not badhathmas/பத்தாத்மாக்கள் and are devathas, they are called as Demi Gods.

Our Poorvacharyas vyakyanam for Thirukkovil also tells that they are calling them also as Thirukkovil based on Sri Vaishnava practices, like Thiruvarangam, Thiruvinnagaram, Thirumaalirunjolai, they also call their temples with the prefix Thiru like in Thiruthani, Thiruvanaikkovil and so they are referred here as Thirukkovil.

And the last word "Sangiduvaar/சங்கிடுவார்" confirms that the practices are of Saiva Practices, as they have the practice of blowing the conch early in the morning during their worship of the demi-gods. This explanation was also given by Shri Embar, who was earlier following Saiva Worship, but later educated and willingly became a True Sri Vaishnavite and is one of the Aacharyas in our Aacharya Guru Parmapara.

Hope the explanation clarifies your doubts..

And here we go with the rest of Today's Paasuram.

maayanai/மாயனை - the one who does things which are extra ordinary and which are not humanly possible

paada/பாட - To sing his Praise

Meaning:

This Paasuram, emphasises the importance of being with Bhagavadhas than with Perumal Himself. It thus tells Bhagavatha Samslesham is much better than Bhagavath Samslesham.

Let us see the meaning of this now...

Hearing the last Paasuram which ended "pangkayakkannaanai paada/பங்கயக்கண்ணானை பாட", the girl in the next house was signing this song lying in her bed. Aandal and her friends listened to her voice from outside, and was astonished by the sweetness of the voice of this girl and hence compares the voice of the girl as that of a Parrot, which is sweet.

Here the word "ILangkiLiye/இளங்கிளியே" refers to the girl inside as kiLi/கிளி and the word iLangkiLi/இளங்கிளி refers to Aandal.

Hearing this the girl inside, who wanted to sleep a little further thought that she should not say anything kept quiet. The girls outside, called her up and asked her to wake up. (Innam urangudhiyoo/இன்னம் உறங்குதியோ)

The girl inside, replied back saying, "Well, I am coming in a minute, do not shout" (sillenRazhaiyeenmin/சில்லென்றழையேன்மின்). And asks the girls outside, "What do you want from me?"!

Our Poorvacharyas explain here the importance of Bhagavatha Samslesham (to be along with Bhagavathas) as something that is better than Bhagavath Samslesham (To be with Bhagavan). They quote the fact that when scholars like Thirukkotiyur Nambi, Periya Nambi are listening to Thiruvaimozhi in Srirangam temple under the Pungai Tree (near Chandhara Pushkarani), it would be not liked if "Selvar" comes in for Theerthavaari. The emphasis here is that Bhagavatha Samslesham and Bhagavatha Kalakshebam is regarded supreeme to Bhagavath Samslesham.

Hearing this the girls outside sharply criticise the girl inside by saying, "We know you are smart in answering questions but please wake up soon so that we can go together for the Vrath" (vallai un katturaikal paNtee un vaay aRIdhum/வல்லை உன் கட்டுரைகள் பண்டே உன் வாய் அறிதும்)

Here again our Poorvacharyas quote from Shri Ramayana. When Bharathazhwan comes to meet Rama in the forest to hand the kingdom to Shri Rama, without knowing the intention, Shri Lakshmanan took his bow and locked an arrow in an attempt to kill Bharatha, thinking he has come to endanger Rama. Shri Rama, on seeing Lakshmana's act and understanding Bharathan's intentions, chided Shri Lakshmana saying, "Bharathan does not have any interest in the Kingdom, if you want you can rule the kingdom". Hearing this Shri Lakshmana came to his senses and understood the greatness of Bharatha.

This instance is again told here because it is important to be with Bhagavathas. Similarly in this Paasuram, Aandal when replying to the angry words of the girl inside replies, "We are here to just be with you and enjoy your company when we meet Shri Krishna. What else we need?!"

The girl inside asked now, "Have everyone who were supposed to come, come?!" (ellaarum poondhaaroo/எல்லாரும் போந்தாரோ)

Aandal replies, "Yes, they have come. Count for yourselves if you want!" (poondhaar poondheNNikkoL/போந்தார் போந்தெண்ணிக்கொள்)

Here again the greatness of being with Bhagavathas are explained in these words. By saying count if you want, it is said that to touch and count and to embrace and count the bhagavathas. Bhagavatha Samslesham again.

vallanai konRaanai/வல்லானை கொன்றானை - The mighty warrior who killed the elephant by name "kuvalayapeedam", which was installed by Kamsa to kill Shri Krishna

maaTRaanai maaTRazhikka vallanai/மாற்றானை மாற்றழிக்க வல்லானை - unlike Shri Rama, who asked Ravana to come the next day to fight, Shri Krishna, within no time killed Kamsa, and all the Wrestlers to rid the people of the bad element and bring in happiness to the kingdom. Shri Krishna also thus released his Parents from the punishment which they were rendered in the jail.

maayanai/மாயனை - The word Maayanai, has already come many times in Thiruppavai thus far. This word, has been celebrated by our Poorvacharyas in numerous ways and here they give the meaning as the one who "Helps the Bhagavathas by removing their hardships (as in the case of Kamsa, Kaliya etc) but such a person who is Sarveshwaran, losing in the hands of Gopikas." Our Poorvacharyas are astonished by this fact that by losing himself to the Gopikas, he wins the heart of them and this act of losing and thereby winning makes them call "Maayan".

paada/பாட - To sing His praise, please join us.

Day 15, Godha Weaves a Vow(English Poem)

‘Oh the one
As youthful as the parrot so young
That many maidens are awake and at your door
You chose to rest yet so long ?’

The maiden that sleeps
Now voices her feel
To the ones that wake her
From her sleep so deep -

‘Irk me not
You the awakened ones
Arise I shall at my will
To join you at that you call.’

It is now those awake
That speak -

‘ You the one, clever in tongue
Aware are we
Your words of mouth, tough they are
Those you have spoken for years so long.’

Replies the one in sleep -
‘ Clever are those tongues
The ones that are your own
Now do enlighten me
On what needs to be done’.

To this the maidens at the door
Speak to the one
Who’s yet to come –
‘ Lift up yourself
From this bed you rest
Is there something, just for you
That pulls you more ?’

The maiden in sleep exclaims –
‘ Oh maidens that you are here

On what purpose do you come ?’

Say the others now
To the one that is yet at rest –
‘ He the one
With proven might
Who killed the elephant
And slained for good
The evil ‘ Kamsa’s’ clan.
To sing in praise
His mercy, Oh maiden
We have set our feet ahead

Day 15 - Did you know...

….that Andal has prayed all the 5 forms of Perumal in a single paasuram of Thiruppavai ?

Here is paasuram : 6

(1)" Vitthinai"--> Para Vaasudevan at Sri Vaikuntam
(2)"VeLLattharavil thuyil amarntha-->Vyuham at Milky Ocean
(3) Sakatam Kalakkazhiya KaalOcchi--> Vibhavam (Krishna avataram)
(4) PuLlarayan Koilil--> Archai (Sri VilliputthUr)
(5) ULLatthu KoNDU--> Haarthan or Antharyami Brahmam

Thus Andal and her fellow gopikas made “Pancha moorthy” vandhanam in the “Pullum silambina” paasuram.
