"Maasanaam Margasheershoham" ( I am the month of Margashirsha) said Sri Krishna in Bhagavad Geetha. So this Margazhi 2010, we decided to do something useful and the result is this blog about "Sri Godha/Sri Andal". If you have 20 minutes, read the entire blog, if you have 10 minutes read only "today's post", if you have 5 minutes just browse the blog, if you have 1 minute, refer this blog to your friends. You never know, they might have that "20 minutes" in store.

This song is so beautiful , look at Andal's wish to offer Thirmaaliruncholai Perumal 100 Thadas(vessels) , I have not seen the actual size of these vessels till now... of Akkara vadisal
and the way she offers by calling Perumal(Eru Thiruvudaiyai) and also asking him to take NOW !!
Further as we do it for kids, she raises Perumal's wish to have many more such vessels forever in future also indicating that she will keep doing this everlasting Kainkaryam with the summing up verse which just pierces our heart "Adiyen Manaththe vanthu nerpadile" !!!
By the way today was just Great for us too! Chakkarai Pongal was very tasty, made with organic vellam ( just a different name tag !!!) I generally get lousy vellam in Bangalore and this one is like Namba Voor Vellam ( thick, dark brown colour, rich aroma - with an added shaping to the vellam mould- conical, in the piece I bought,and everything went off so smoothly driven by Godha and Perumal.
This is indeed a day of E - Koodarai Valli and E Koodi Irunthu Kulirnthom Naal for us.

My name is Sujatha Guruvayurappan. I live in the USA
Yesterday(Dec 21st) was Winter Solstice. According to Wikipedia, winter solstice is
the reversal of the gradual lengthening of nights and shortening of days. To put
it in my words, from tomorrow the sun rises little late than the previous
day also sets late than the previous day. So what is this have to do with Thiruppavai?
Winter Solstice has nothing do with Thiruppavai, I think it has something do with
litting lamps in Karthigai/Margazhi months.
Since night sets in too early before Winter Solstice(which is Karthiga month), people must
have started litting lamps in the evenings to bring some light into the dark. After
Winter Solstice(Margazhi)sun rises late everyday. So to bring some light into the dark mornings,
people might have started litting lamps in the morning in Margazhi.
Look at the sunset and sunrise time of Chennai and Washington D.C.
Chennai's sunset time:

My name is Sujatha, I live in the USA. This is my experience regarding Thiruppavai Pasuram

Here in the USA where I live(East Coast), we have four seasons:Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. During spring season, birds that migrated south for winter, will fly back to its place and start their routine. Since our house is surrounded by trees, entire spring we hear bird calls/songs. Everyday around 4:00 AM the birds starts chirping. (and the chirping continues till sun set)To put it in tamil, எந்த ராஜா எந்த பட்டணம் போனாலும், 4 மணிக்கு கீசு கீசு என்று தூங்கிக் கொண்டுஇருக்கும் உலகத்தை எழுப்பும். Those bird calls used to be highly annoying. If you have sensitive ears like me, you cannot sleep after 4:00 AM. I used to be so irritated for having lost my morning sleep. Incidentally last winter I was listening to one of Sri Velukkudi Swami's lectures. In that lecture he said:
Andal in Naachiyar Thirumozhi says "காலை எழுந்திருந்து கரிய குருவி கணங்கள் மாலின் வரவு சொல்லி மருள் பாடுதல் மெய்மை கொலோ. " (The black birds wake up in the morning to welcome Sriman Narayana).Swami explained briefly about this line. I was puzzled and preplexed. I was using all sorts of ear plugs to block those bird calls, but Andal has some other meaning for those chirps.
The following spring, when the birds started chirping, I was not at all annoyed. Instead I was thinking, could it be really true that the birds chirp to welcome Sriman Narayana?I got out of bed, peeped through my window to get a glimpse of (atleast) the birds if not the Almighty. In that dark nothing was visible. Sigh!!Scientifically there may be some reason for the birds chirping. But I brain washed mysef that birds are chirping only to welcome Sriman Narayana. Right from that day till the end of spring, I used to wait for the bird to chirp in the morning. The moment I hear the first chirp, I will think "பெருமாள் வரார் போல இருக்கு". That very thought makes me undergo so many changes. Imagining Perumal in Garuda Vahanam between the trees in front of our house, oh…!!! I'm at a loss to explain that blissful feeling in words. I may be crazy but still…
Now I'm waiting for this spring which starts on March 20.

Dear All,
About a temple at Denkanikottai I would like to share some informtion. I have been to this temple quite a few times since I was in Standard 7. This beautiful town has an ancient temple of Beteraya Swamy(vettaiadiya piran in Tamil),this temple is said to be around 500 years old.The annual car festival of this lord is quite famous around the region,this festival happens generally during the month of march and April. You cannot find more information about this temple otherwise. Following all the SriVaishnava Utsavams, here we can see the people's devotion and the shraddha to perform all the Utsavams. The temple is 24 Kms from Hosur. Please visit if you are in India or you get a chance to come. Kindly excuse as I dont have any picture of the temple as such.
