MEANING:

Oh IsvarI, who controls the Lord, who Himself controls the entire world! Oh

ANDavanai aaLum ANDALE! Your Lord has the famous, never fading vana maalai

known as VyjayanthI on his shoulders and chest. The divine fragrance of that garland

attracts the honeybees. They hover around that garland on the Lord's chest. At this

time of morning, Your father brings the flower garland, which was worn earlier on

Your tresses and presents it to the Lord. Your Lord bends His neck, receives it and

wears that special garland with the sambhandham of Your kesam on His head as

Kesavan. Immediately, there is a big rushing by the bees from VyjayanthI maalai to

the garland of Yours on the head of the Lord. They jostle with each other to get there

first and circle around and thus form a black umbrella as it were over the head of the

Lord. The honeybees seem to vote to indicate the superiority of the fragrance of Your

garland over that of the VyjayanthI maalai from their expert perspective.

தங்கள் திருக்கொயில் சங்கிடுவான் போகின்றார்

எங்களை முன்னம் எழுப்புவான் வாய்பேசும்

சங்கொடு சக்கரம் ஏந்தும் தடக்கையன்

Introduction:

In this paasuram, Aandal wakes up a girl, who had earlier said to everyone that she will lead everyone from front for the Vrath and also wake everyone up early in the morning, but still sleeping.

Padhapadhaartham - பதபதார்த்தம் - Word by Word Meaning:

engkalai/எங்களை - We, your friends

munnam eazuppuvaan/முன்னம் எழுப்புவான் - to wake us up in the morning

vaaypeesum/வாய்பேசும் - to have said so

nangaay/நங்காய் - Hey Complete Lady!!

naaNaadhaai/நாணாதாய் - the one who is not feeling guilty having not done what was told committed earlier (To wake us up)

naavudaiyaai/நாவுடையாய் - the one who has the tongue with which you say sweet words

ungkaL puzaikkatai thottathu vaaviyuL/உங்கள் புழைக்கடை தோட்டத்து வாவியுள் - in the pond that is there in your garden at the back of your house

senkazhuniir vaay nekizhndhu/செங்கழுநீர் வாய் நெகிழ்ந்து - the flower (Senkazhuniir) which has blossomed

aambal vaay kuumbinakaaN/ஆம்பல் வாய் கூம்பினகாண் - cant you see the buds of the flower (Karuneithal)

sengkal poti kuuRai/செங்கல் பொடி கூறை - those with safron dresses (sanyasis)

veNpal/வெண்பல் - the ones with white teeth

thavaththavar/தவத்தவர் - those saiva sanyasis

thangkaL thirukkoyil/தங்கள் திருக்கோயில் - in their temples

sangu iduvaan/சங்கு இடுவான் - to blow the conch

poogindRaar/போகின்றார் - so they go

sangkotu sakkaram/சங்கொடு சக்கரம் - with Conch and the devine Disc

eendhum/ஏந்தும் - to elegandly hold in both the hands

thata kaiyan/தட கையன் - the one with long hands

pangkaya kaNNaanai/பங்கய கண்ணானை - the one with eyes that can be compared with the red lotus

paada/பாட- to sing His praise

eazhundhiraay/எழுந்திராய் - please wake up

Meaning:

"Hey the beautiful girl! The one who has the tongue which always says the sweetest things (naavudaiyaai/நாவுடையாய்), have you forgotten that you had told that you will wake us all up early in the morning? Arent you ashamed that you have not kept up your words and still sleeping?!" asks Aandal, in an attempt to wake up a girl to go along with them for the Vrath.

But the girl wont wake up and so Aandal hints her the happenings which tells the girl sleeping inside the house that it is already morning! The happenings that she tells are

1)the flowers in the pond in the backyard of the house have blossomed -which only happens when the flowers see the sun (sengkazhuniir vaai negizndhu/செங்கழுநீர் வாய் நெகிழ்ந்து)

2)the saiva sanyasis have started going towards their temples to offer their prayers to their demigods by blowing the conch (sengkal potikkuuRai veNpal thavaththavar thangkaL thirukkoyil sangiduvaar pookinRaar/செங்கல் பொடிக்கூறை வெண்பல் தவத்தவர் தங்கள் திருக்கோயில் சங்கிடுவார் போகின்றார்)

And when the girl wouldnt wake up even after such instances, Aandal tells the girl that it is time to go and sing the praise of Shri Krishna, who has the Conch and the divine disc in both His hands and waiting for all the girls to come and take part in the Vrath.

Pangayakkannanai/பங்கையக்கண்ணானை
The one who has eyes that can be compared to that of a Lotus that has blossomed right then.

Day 14, Godha Weaves a Vow(English Poem)

The flowers of lotus

Those at your backyard pond

Have blossomed.

The ‘ ambal’ flowers

Have had their petals down to rest

The sages in saffron

Their teeth in sparkling white

Are readying to open the temple doors.

Maiden ye,

Word you lent

That you shall rise

And awaken us instead

Oh you the one of forsaken word

With as sweet a tongue

As the one you have

To sing in praise

For Him

In whose hands reign the disc and conch

For Him

Who is the lotus eyed one

Appeal to you, you wake up.

Day 14 Recipe - Coconut Milk Payasam

Ingredients:

Coconut Milk : 1 cup

Jaggery : 1/4 cup

Elachi

Method:

• Grind the coconut and extract the thick milk. Keep it aside.
• With the remaining coconut add some water, again grind it, you will get a thin milk. Keep it aside.
• In the jaggery add little water, filter it.
• Add this jaggery water to the thin coconut milk.
• Allow it to boil for 5 to 8 minutes in a medium flame.
• Remove from the stove, add the thick coconut milk and elachi.

Day 14 - Did you know...

.....why the month “Margazhi” is considered "auspicious" ?
1) Our Margazhi month is "pratha kala", i.e., early morning (Brahma Muhurtham) for Devas (for whom one human year is equal to one day and our utharaayanam in thai maasam is equivalent to sunrise). Since Devas do not have Archavathara perumal (in the form of deity), they come down during "pratha kala" to worship Perumal in various temples. So Andal had chosen this time to sing “Thiruppavai”.

2)This is with reference to Periya Vachan Pillai's Vyakhyanam :
"Rasa kuligai" is the one which possesses the power of turning any object into gold by its very touch. Similarly, anyone who holds on to Bhagavan has no auspicious or inauspicious time.This is because, Perumal is the protector and gives whatever is required (by His devotee), removes whatever is not needed, leads the devotee in the path suited to him/her.Hence the devotee need not earn / attain Siddhi.The greatest 'siddhi' is Bhagavan Himself! Since Andal holds Krishna Himself in her fist, is there any want for Her? Therefore, the month that She chooses is the most auspicious one.
