Day 28, Godha Weaves a Vow (English Poem)

Oh ‘Govinda’, the untouched one

Born though we are
In the cowherd clan,
As mortals of meagre learning
With the mundane purpose
To shoulder our bodily beings
And reach the woods behind the cows at feed
We have gained the gift of blissful deeds
That this birth has brought along
Oh our Seer, ‘ Kanna’.

None could untie the bond
Neither we nor You
Unaware but in the depth of love
The names we sang in praise
If you find them trivial
May you shed your wrath
And grant us the gift of servitude.

2009-10 Srirangam Andal Alankaaram

Day 28 - Did you know...

..…the paasurams 28 [karavaigal pin senru] and 29 [sitram siru kaale] of Thiruppavai together constitute “Dhvaya maha manthram” ?
Dhvaya manthram is one of the “Rahasya thrayam” (3 secret manthras) which is taught by an Acharyan to a Sishya during pancha samskaaram and so the manthram is not mentioned here. Instead the meaning associated with Thiruppavai is discussed.

Dhvaya means “two”. The Dhvaya manthram has 2 lines. This manthram is known as “Manthra rathnam” as it alone says what a “Charanaagathan” (person who surrender to the lotus feet of Lord) is supposed to do. It also has “Sri sampantham”(association with Sridevi) which is evident in both the lines.

(poorva vaakyam) 1st line -> Saranaagathi anushtithal -> Surrendering to Sri mann Narayana, accepting Perumal’s lotus feet as the only MEANS to attain HIM - Karavaigal pin senru [28]

Explanation:
Andal says that they have “Krishna” as their only MEANS in the verse unthannai (only You)...punniyam yaam udayomand not their efforts - arivonnum (karma, Gnana and Bhakthi yogams) illaatha aaikulathuof practicing the 3 yogams so as to reach HIM.

(Uthara vakyam) 2nd line -> Kainkarya praarthanai -> Seeking HIS service - Sitram sirukaale [29]

Explanation:
Andal seeks ceaseless service to Krishna alone and not any mateiral benefits in this verse Unakke (only to You and Your Bhaagavathaas) naam aat seivom. She also requests HIM to remove all the obstacles in achieving the same in the verse matrai nam kaamangal maatru”.
By obstacle, Andal refers to “Swayapreethi buddhi” - meaning: believing that we do service to Perumal for the sake of our happiness. It is not the real case. We do Kainkaryams to see HIS happiness and to enjoy that SMILE. This is the essence of “Nama ha” in Thirumanthram.

Periavachan pillai comments the 29th paasuram as “Thiruppavai aagirathu ippaattu “ (திருப்பாவை ஆகிறது இப்பாட்டு) as it explains the uthara vaakyam of “Dhvaya manthram”.

paRai thaaraay/பறை தாராய் - Please provide us with Moksha.

Meaning:

Shri Krishna says, "I am not able to understand what qualifications you need to get Moksham(parai kondu/parai tharuthi aagil etc). Unless you tell me your qualifications, I am not in a position to give it to you". Aandal replies to Shri Krishna in this paasuram telling Him that it is only because of the "Dhaya/தயா" in Him that they should give them Moksham.

As those who have discarded any other means (ஸாத்யோபாயம்) to attain Moksha than to hold Sriman Narayana's Lotus Feet (Siddhopayam/ஸித்தோபாயம்), Aandal says that she has nothing to offer as a qualification to attain Moksha.

All they have is, "they havent practiced any karma/gnana/bhakthi yogas", "they enjoy Perumal's Kalyanagunas", "They understand the relationship between Him and Jeevathma", "they ask for excuse for the mistakes they have done in the past", "To take His Lotus Feet as the only way". "And to do Kainkaryam" are the 6 qualifications that we have.

(kaRavaigal pinsendru/கறவைகள் பின்சென்று) Through these words, Aandal says that they are from a birth which goes behind cows looking for milk by grazing them.

(aRivondRUm illaatha aaykulaththu/அறிவொன்றும் இல்லாத ஆய்குலத்து) - They know no "procedures" that were laid down in the Vedhas or Upanishads, nor they have been able to look into someone who is learned, as they spend their life in forests.

(kuRaivondRumillaatha goovindha/குறைவொன்றுமில்லாத கோவிந்தா) - You are the one, who is complete in all aspects. You are the Supreme!!

(uRaveeol namakkingkozhikka vozhiyaathu/உறவேல் நமக்கிங்கொழிக்க வொழியாது) - Through this the relationship between the Aaichiyars and Perumal is expressed

(siiRiyaruLaathee/சீறியருளாதே) - By this they ask for excuse for the mistakes that they have done in the past and ask Him not to be angry on them.

(iRaivaa nee thaaraay paRai/இறைவா நீ தாராய் பறை) - The end that they want is what they ask through this line.

(kuRaiondRUmillaadha goovinda/குறைவொன்றுமில்லாத கோவிந்தா) - Hey Govinda! You are the one who has no negatives. That is the positive that we have. We have You amidst us. While you, who live among the Nithyasoories, who are having no negatives as well, have come to us who are full of negatives we have nothing to worry.

(undRannai chiRupeerazhaithathanavum siiRiyaruLaathee/உன்றன்னை சிறுபேர் அழைத்தனவும் சீறியருளாதே) - Aandal asks for excuses for having called Shri Krishan with names like, Navaneethachoora, Dhaamoodhara, Govinda, Madhava instead of the name "Narayana", which describes His Parathavam. Having done this mistake they ask for excuses and plead to Him to not to be angry with them but have mercy and give them Moksha.

MEANING:
Godhai, who incarnated as the daughter of PeriyAzhwAr has the bluish hue of
sapphire (indra neelam). In one of Her hand, She adorns a white Lilly flower
(Senkazhuneer malar = kalhAra pushpam)). She is slightly bent from the weight of
Her heavy breasts. She overlooks all of our aparAdhams (trespasses) and showers us
with Her matchless daya. She removes the flower garlands worn on Her tresses and
presents them to Her Lord and thereby brings Him under Her spell. May Godhai of
these auspicious attributes reside in our hearts always!
