In the 6th Pasuram, Aandal woke up a girl who is new to Bhagavath Vishayam and in the 7th she woke up a girl who has knowledge about Bhagavath Sambandham. In this Pasuram, she tries to wake up a girl, who is near and dear to Shri. Krishna.

Meaning:

kodhukalamudaiya paavai/கோதுகலமுடைய பாவாய்: Andal says, "Hey girl! The one that Shri Krishna likes very much. Please wake up and come along with us. It is already dawn and you can see the sunlight in the eastern sky."

keezhvaanam vellendru earumai siruveedu/கீழ்வானம் வெள்ளென்று எருமை சிருவீடு: Andal also shows another happening to prove that it is dawn. She refers to the Buffalos which have been let out to graze (break fast) just before they will be milked. She tells the girl who is sleeping that it is time to wake up and it be better fast, as the Buffalos and cows will be milked soon and Krishna will go away to rear them and we will not get to see them.

The girls asks, "Why me?! Where are the rest of those who havent joined you?".

poovan pogindraarai poogamal kaaththu/போவான் போகின்றாரை போகாமல் காத்து - Andal says, "You are the one who is dear to Shri Krishna. If you dont turn up with us, Krishna will feel very bad and you cannot be the reason for that. The other girls, those who are sleeping are much younger to you and those who are not here have already gone ahead. We cannot go without you and so we stopped and are trying to go along with you".

Here Aandal tells a crucial Sri Vaishnava Philosophy, of being with Adiyaars/Bhagavathas is more important than to be with Krishna himself. Bhagavatha Samslesham is more important than Bhagavath Samslesham and without Bhagavadha Samslesham, Bhagavath Samslesham wont be enjoyable.

Aandal, instead of talking about the cows is talking about the buffalos here!! It is because, the buffalo is used as a representation for the Tamasik nature of the human. As the buffalos are let out to graze early in the morning, the Brahma Muhoortha time, is the time when Tamasik qualities are at their low and Saathwik qualities are at a high.

poovaan poogindraarai/போவான் போகின்றாரை - When the girl, asks Aandal the purpose of going along, Aandal replies, "The purpose of going to see Krishna, it itself. What more reason do we want to go and see Him than to enjoy and embrace His presence? It is Swayam Prayojanam/ஸ்வயம் ப்ரயோஜனம்."

maavaai piLandhaanai/மாவாய் பிளந்தானை - "And so we are here in front of your house, trying to wake you up and take you along with us so that as a Bhagavatha Goshti we can enjoy Krishna Anubhavam. Let us sing the praise of the supreme God who killed the demon named Kesi, with the face as that of a horse, and who killed the two wrestlers who were stationed by Kamsa to kill Him."

Krishna always wants to come and see us. But if we go early to meet him at his place, he will be shocked and he will shower his grace on us. He will understand that we have all the qualities as that of a student (Sishya/சிஷ்யா) and will as a true aacharya shower the Knowledge on us.

In this Paasuram, there are many Sampradhayic meanings:

koodhukalamudaiya paavai/கோதுகலமுடைய பாவாய்: Here Aandal refers to the girl as the one who is close to the hearts of Shri Krishna. This girl, being a representative of an adiyar, on whom Shri Krishna showers his love and blessings. This tells that more than the love and affection that Adiyars have on Perumal, the love that Perumal has on the Adiyars are much more and that He feels very sad even if one of such Adiyars (Jeevathma) wont reach Him.

The Pasuram also highligths the fact that Bhagavatha Samslesham (Togetherness with Bhagavathas) is what Emberuman likes and also highlights this as a very important quality of a Shri Vaishnava.

The Paasuram also tells that Aandal follows the footsetps of Thondaradipodi Aazhwar in trying to wake up (Thiruppali Eazhuchi) someone. Thondaradipodi Aazhwar sang Thiruppalli Ezhuchi to wake up Emberuman. Aandal does the same to wake up HIS Adiyars.

Day 8, Godha Weaves a Vow(English Poem)

Oh Krishna’s beloved so naive
The eastern sky gleams in white
The oxen and the buffaloes
Are out to graze,you see,
On dewdrop fields beaming alive.
The hurried stride of maidens new
Those that longed to bathe
And reach the Lord ahead of you
We put their strides at hold, for now,
At your castle’s door wecome
Awake Oh girl and join us for this vow.
May we sing His glories abound
Those that shall free us
From fetters of this ground
He is the one who rode
To put an end
To horse demon Kesi - not worth a remorse.
To that Lord of Lords
If we pray
By His side and down His feet
Our yearns shall reach His ears that care
And mercy shall be a gift from the king of Gods.
That shall free us
To reach thosehallowed feet

Day 8 Recipe - Mango Pachchadi

Mango Pachchadi:

Mango : 1 medium size
Jaggery : 1 1/4 cup
Green Chilli : 1
Mustard : 1/2 tsp
Red Chilli : 2 to 3
Turmeric Powder
Curry Leaves
Asafoetida
Salt

To Grind:

Red Chilli : 3
Fenugreek : 1/2 spoon

Fry it and powder it. Keep aside.

Method:

Slice the mango in to pieces. Add Green Chiili. Cook that in the stove top with little water (1/2 cup) . When it is half done, add pinch of salt, curry leaves, Jaggery (Soak the jaggery in water and filter it), Aesofotida. Let that boil for sometime. Say 5 mts. Add the powder (Red chilli, fenugreek) to it and allow it to boil till it thickens.

Seasoning:

In a kadai, add some oil, splutter mustard, curry leaves and add to the Mango Pachadi.

This pachadi will have all the tastes (Sweet, Spice, Salt, Sour etc - If you get Neem flower you can fry that in the ghee a little bit and add to the pachadi, this will give the bitter taste too. Normally we add the neem flower during the tamil new year's day) Please try this, I am sure you will definitely like it!

Day 8 - Did you know...

.....that “Mankalya thaaranam” is not mentioned in Andal’s “Vaaranam ayiram” of Nachiar thirumozhi ?
Andal dreams of her marriage with Srimann Narayana and narrates that beautifully to her friend in “Vaaranam ayiram” (10 pasurams) of Nachiar thirumozhi. She narrates the marriage customs right from Srimann Narayana, the bridegroom entering the mandapam majestically with 1000 elephants till they (Andal and Narayana) together sitting on an elephant , go for a Wedding procession around the decorated streets.

As per the Vedas, “agni valam” (Bridegroom holding the hand of the bride, goes around the fire for 3 times) and “sapthapathi” (seven steps to the mortar stone) signify the marriage. Vedas do not talk about “Mankalya thaaranam”.The mantharam we recite “Mankalyam thanthunane” is not in Vedas. They came later as a social custom. Every girl would enjoy her wedding as Gotha did, if they recite knowing the meaning of “Vaaranam aayiram”.

Below is the brief note of customs mentioned by Andal in the pasurams, which are being followed by Sri Vaishnavites :

2naalai vathuvaiGovindhan walks like a lion and enters the wedding stage which is adorned with flowers.
3Indhiran ullittaEngagement happens, wherein Andal is made to wear “Koora pudavai” bestowed with Vedha manthras. Her sister-in-law adorns Andal with the garland.
4Narthisai theerthamThe bride and groom are sprinkled with holy water and their hands are bonded together and the “Kaappu” (holy thread to protect from evil) is tied on their hands. Kaappu kattal
5kathiroli theepamBeautiful young girls with lamps glowing as bright as the Sun and golden kalasam in their hands, welcome Kannan, who enters like a thunder.
6mathalamWith the drums beating and the conch blowing, Madhusudan comes under the stage decorated with pearl garlands and holds the hand of Andal.
7vai nallarAs the learned scholars recite the Vedas, the fire is started with “dharbai” (straws) and Kannan goes around the fire with Andal by His hand. This is the most significant part of the wedding.

Hi,

My name is Sujatha Guruvayurappan. I live in the USA

Yesterday(Dec 21st) was Winter Solstice. According to Wikipedia, winter solstice is
the reversal of the gradual lengthening of nights and shortening of days. To put
it in my words, from tomorrow the sun rises little late than the previous
day also sets late than the previous day. So what is this have to do with Thiruppavai?

Winter Solstice has nothing do with Thiruppavai, I think it has something do with
litting lamps in Karthigai/Margazhi months.

Since night sets in too early before Winter Solstice(which is Karthiga month), people must
have started litting lamps in the evenings to bring some light into the dark. After
Winter Solstice(Margazhi)sun rises late everyday. So to bring some light into the dark mornings,
people might have started litting lamps in the morning in Margazhi.

Look at the sunset and sunrise time of Chennai and Washington D.C.

Chennai's sunset time:

All over the world Karthigai month is too dark in the evenings and Margazhi month is too dark in the mornings.

So this is my assumption of litting lamps at our entrance. Am I correct or not?????
