MEANING:
Oh Mother GodhE! You are like the other form of Chandran. Vedams declare that Chandran was born out of the mind of VishNu (Chandramaa ManasO Jaatha:). You incarnated as the darling daughter of PeriyAzhwAr (VishNu Chitthar). Chandran delights the heart of every one through His cool rays. You uplift the people of the world independent of their status through the nectar of Your dhivya Prabhandhams and Your dhivya svarUpam .The learned souls recognize Your similarities to Chandran and comprehend You as the sibling (Koodap PiRanthavaL) of Periya PirAtti, who arose out of the milky Ocean. You are recognized as Lakshmi Sahajai just as Chandran is a Lakshmi Sahajan for having born out of the very same milky ocean.

Introduction:
In this Pasuram Aandal tries to wake up a girl, who is sleeping thinking, "Let Krishna come whenever he wants to". This girl is representative of the qualities of Sita, who when in Lanka refused to go with Hanuman when Hanuman said he will rescue her, and wanted Shri Rama to come and rescue her as that is His responsibility.
In the previous Pasuram, Aandal woke up a Muthathma. In this Pasuram, she wakes up a Nithyasoori.

thoomaNi maaDaththu suTrum Vilakkeriya Dhoobam Kamazha thuyilanaimel kaNvalarum- Hey Girl!!! The one who is in deep sleep inside the bungalow which is studded with Rathnam and which is lit by holy lights and where beautiful fragrance lingers!!!

maamaan magale maNikkadhavam thaazh thiravai - Hey Cousin! (Mother's Brother's Daughter)!! Please open the door which is studded with Manikkam (Preciuos stones).

Here Andal calls a girl who lives in Thiruvaaipaadi, which is very far away from Sriviliputtur, and has no blood relationship with her as "maamaan magal".

Our Poorvacharyas always finds themselves related to the Supreme Sriman Narayana in nine ways:

1) Pithruputhra bhaavam/பித்ரு புத்ர பாவம் - Father and son relationship
2) rakshaya rakshaka baavam/ரக்ஷ்ய ரக்ஷக பாவம் - The saviour and the saved
3) sesha seshi baavam/சேஷ சேஷி பாவம் - Master and slave relationship
4) barthru baaryaa baavam/பர்த்ரு பார்யா பாவம் - Husband and Wife relationship
5) Gyaatha Gyeyee baavam/ஜ்யாதா ஜ்ஞேயே பாவம் - Teacher and Studetn Relationship
6) Swasswaami baavam/ஸ்வஸ்வாமி பாவம் - Property and Owner Relationship
7) aathaara theeya baavam/ஆதார தேய பாவம் - The Supporter and the Supported Relationshiop
8) sreeraathma baavam/சரீராத்ம பாவம் - The body and the athma relationship
9) bookthru boogya baavam/போக்த்ரு போக்ய பாவம் - the enjoyed and the enjoyer relationship

Our Poorvacharyas have in many of their works have established that only Srimann Narayanan is the true relationship that one has to cherish and all the earthly relationships to be given up. Nammazhwar in Thiruvaimozhi "Konda Pendir MakkaL uTraar..."/"கொண்ட பெண்டிர் மக்கள் உற்றார்..." tells us to leave all the earthly relationships as they are temporary and they are only there as long as it is beneficial for those who want something from us.

So our Poorvacharyas wonder why Aandal is wanting to have a "blood relationship" with another Jeevaathma?
Our Poorvachaaryar's explanation is that Aandal, having thought of herself as an Aaichi, wanted to have blood relationship with the others in Aaipaadi. Like Shri. Koorathaazhwan's one wish which never became true, which was to have blood relationship with Shri. Ramanuja, like Shri Mudhaliandan (who was blood related to Shri. Ramanuja).
Nammazhwar again in Thiruvaimozhi also says, "nalla padhaththaal manai vaazvar koNta peNdri Makkale/நல்ல பதத்தால் மனை வாழ்வர் கொண்ட பெண்டிர் மக்களே".

And so our Poorvacharyas conclude with these in mind, that it is indeed a pleasure to have blood relationship with those who are "Helpful" and "Willing to walk along" in Bhagavath Vishayam. Our Poorvacharyas always found a relationship with another Jeevathma as the one who has a relationship with Sirman Narayana as that is the only one which will never change. All these worldy blood relationships will change when you are born again and they arent guaranteed to be there forever as well.

So Aandal wants to have a relationship with an AATHMA BANDHU/ஆத்ம பந்து in Aayarpaadi and hence calls her out Maamaan Magale.

maameer avalai eazhupeero unmagal dhaan uumayo andri chevido anandhallo eamapperuthuyir mandhirappattalo/மாமீர் அவளை எழுப்பீரோ உன்மகள் தான் ஊமையோ அன்றி செவிடோ அனந்தலோ எமப்பெருந்துயிர் மந்திரப்பட்டாளோ - Now Aandal calls the mother of the girl and asks her to wake her up from the sleep. And she gets upset and asks the mother if her daughter is dumb as she has not responded to her calls, if she is deaf as she has not heard their calls. She also wonders if the girl is very tired because of the night before that she had spent with Krishna!!!

As the girl would not wake up for anything, Andal wonders if the girl is in a trance!!!

Our Poorvacharya's explanation for this in Sri Vaishnava Philosophy is as follows:

Aandal wanted to have a relationship with another Jeevathma who is addressed in this Pasuram as a representative of Nithya Soori. As Shasthra (Vedas) say, one has to be dumb when it comes to saying bad things about others, one has to be deaf when it comes to hearing bad things from others, and one has to be deaf when it comes to seeing the mistakes of others. Aandal tries to befriend such a girl as these are qualities which help one to conquor their senses and attain the grace of Shri Krishna.

maamaayan maadhavan vaigundhan endrendru naamam palavum navinndrelo/மாமாயன் மாதவன் வைகுந்தன் என்றென்று நாமம் பலவும் நவின்றேலோ -

Maamaayan/மாமாயன் - the one who does unthinkable acts. Our Poorvacharyas explain this wonderfully as a display by Srimann Narayana's Sowlabya Kalyana Gunam. Maayan - Maamaayan. Mayan meaning one who does unthinkable and actions that are not possible by normal human beings, like that in the Dasa Avatars of Sriman Narayana.

Matsya Avatar/மத்ஸ்ய அவதாரம் - To take birth in this earth as the lowest being in hierarchy - A Fish
Kuurma Avatar/கூர்ம அவதாரம் - To take birth in this world as a tortoise which is a representative of someone who can control senses
Varaaha Avatar/வராஹ அவதாரம் - To take birth as a dirty "pig"
Vaamana Avatar/வாமன அவதாரம் - To take birth as a small brahmin boy (small in height)
Narasimha Avatar/நரஸிம்ம அவதாரம் - To take birth as a mixture of human and lion
Parasurama Avatar/பரசுராம அவதாரம் - To take birth as an angry rishi
Rama Avatar/ராம அவதாரம் - to take birth as a human being
Balaraama Avatar/பலராம அவதாரம் - to take birth as a mighty prince
Krishna Avatar/க்ருஷ்ண அவதாரம் - to take birth again as a human being who was a chariotier to Arjuna
Kalki Avatar/கல்கி அவதாரம் - To take birth in this world as someone who will be born and remove the bad elements of the world

Maamaayan because of the countless chestithangal/சேஷ்டிதங்கள் (acts that are not humanly possible):

Matsya Avatar/மத்ஸ்ய அவதாரம் - To save Vedhas and all the living beings from drowning by growing in size as a very big fish
Kuurma Avatar/கூர்ம அவதாரம் - To help the Devas to get Amrutha by being the support to churn Parkadal

Varaaha Avatar/வராஹ அவதாரம் - To save the earth (Bhoomadhevi) who was hidden in deep water

Vaamana Avatar/வாமன அவதாரம் - To hide PeriyaPiratti(Sri Lakshmi) who always resides in His cheast and to grow very tall and measure all the worlds in 3 steps

Narasimha Avatar/நரஸிம்ம அவதாரம் - To save a small boy and to rid the earth from the evil of Hiranyakasipu by tearing them with His finger nails

Parasurama Avatar/பரசுராம அவதாரம் - To challenge Himself, when Parasurama asks Rama to handle Vishnu Dhanush(Bow)

Rama Avatar/ராம அவதாரம் - To give Moksha to Jatayu, when he said that he didnt know where Sita was.

Balaraama Avatar/பலராம அவதாரம் - To do all Kainkaryams to Shri Krishna and protect him as a "normal" brother would

Krishna Avatar/க்ருஷ்ண அவதாரம் - countless number of instances like that of dancing on Kalinga, lifting of Govardhana Giri, killing of Kamsa, hiding the sun behind his chakra, doing the work of a "messenger", being a charioteer (Sarathy), killing many of the Rakshasas as if nothing ever happened when was a child, born with four arms (Chathurbhujan/சதுர்புஜன்) but immediately hid them on his father's request and lot more

Kalki Avatar/கல்கி அவதாரம் - To be born as someone who rides a white horse and save the world from the bad elements.

Maadhavan - The husband of Shri Mahalakshmi. The one who shows his Kalyana Gunam because of Shri Lakshmi's advice. The Kalyana Gunam of Vatsalya, Swamithwa, Sowlabhyam, Sowsheelyam and Gnana Shakthi.
Vaikundhan - Sriman Narayanan who resides in Vaikund

Thus Aandal calls Perumal with countless names, and sings His praises in an effort to catch the attention of the girl and requests the girl's parents to wake her up so that they can go as a Goshti to see Krishna and get his blessings.

Adinaayen Ramanuja Dasan

(Apologise for a lengthy commentary. Actually I feel that I can write lot more, but restricted myself to this as I felt this itself might be too big for readers. If there are enough interests, can write a seperate article on this, especially on MAAMAAYAN!!!!!

Day 9, Godha Weaves a Vow(English Poem)

Into the palace carved with pristine gems
May the morn’s light
Peep form all sides
On the palace that is all lit
With fragrance all around.

Rise from that soft bed you rest
Oh her brother’s born
The one that nursed me in her womb so long
Pray, you unfasten the doors carved in gems.

Could you not lift your child
Oh aunt of mine
From such slumber of length
And the one such in depth
Is she dumb Or is she deaf
Fettered to her bed is she ?
Charmed by some magic spell is she ?

To chant His names of praise
We learnt by rote for years by gone
His name, whose deeds of mystery
Could be reached by Him alone
‘Madhavan’ is His name
‘Vaikunthan’ is also He
To resound in praise His glory’s names
Will she not now leave her sleep?

Day 9 - Did you know...

….why Andal is referred to as “Sri” (Sri Devi) in the “Thaniyan” by Parasara Bhattar though she is an incarnation of Bhooma Devi?
Upon the request of his prathama sishya Nam Jeeyar, Bhattarpiran composed thanian in which he salutes all Azhwars as..

"பூதம் ஸரஷ்ச மஹ-தாஹ்வய-பட்ட-நாத-
ஸ்ரீ-பக்தி-ஸார-குலஸேகர-யோகி-வாஹான்,
பக்தாங்கிரிரேணு பரகால-யதீந்த்ர மிஷ்றான்,
ஸ்ரீமத் பராங்குஸ முனிம் ப்ரண-தோஸ்மி நித்யம்"
“bhootham sarascha mahaa-dhaahvaya-bhatta-naadha-
sri-bhakthi-saara-kulasEkhara-yOgi-vaahaan,
bhakthaangirirENu parakaala-yathindra mishRaan,
sreemath paraankusa munim prana-thOsmi nithyam”

where he mentions Andal as “Sri”. Bhattar explains this in his composition - Sri Rangaraja Sthavam, where he equates Andal to Sridevi.

utpulla pankaja taTaakam iva upayAni
SrIrangarAjam iha dakshiNa savya seemnO:
lakshmeem vihAra rasikAm iva rAjahamseem
chAyAm iva abyudayineem avaneem ca tasyA:

This means:
The Lord RangarAja Himself is pond rich in lotuses – His eyes, face, palms, feet all being lotus-like. On His right and left respectively are the playful swans, Sree Devi and Bhoomi Devi. If Lakshmi is the halo and the shadow of the Lord, Bhoomi Devi is Her shadow. Bhoomi devi nourishes and protects Lakshmi in her enjoyment.

Thus, Andal is also mentioned in the pothu thaniyan as one of the Azhwars in the form of “Sri”.
