Godha Stuthi - 6

sONAdharEpi KuchayOrapi ThungabhadrA
VaachAm pravAha nivahEapi SarsavathI thvAm
AprAkruthairapi RasairvirajA svabhAvAth
Godhaapi Devi kamithur nanu NarmadhAsi

MEANING:
Oh Devi GodhE! Thou art like rivers SONA, ThungabhadhrA, Sarasvathi with its swift currents, the clear VirajA of Sri Vaikuntam,GodhAvari and NarmadhA. The inner meaning is that Godhai's lips are red like the waters of SONA river. Her breasts have a majestic appearance as ThiungabhadrA river. Her nectarine speech is like the veritable Sarasvathi river also known as Vegavathi (One with speedy flow). Her Prabhandhams are full of anubhavams based on the Satthva guNams like a veritable VirajA river, which is outside this prakruthi mandalam. She is like GodhAvari in being naturally gracious and is like river NarmadhA, which gladdens the heart of Her Lord through teasing speech.

Introduction:

In hte first Paasuram Andaal described Praapya Swaroopam (Means to attain Him), Praapaka Swaroopam (The result-kainkaryam) and Adhikaari Swaroopam (Eligibility to attain)

In the second Pasuram she explained the dos and donts for such an Adhikaari.

In the third Paasuram Andal explained the prosperiety that comes because of the Anushtanams/அனுஷ்டானம் of such Bhagavathas.

In the fourth, we saw how the demi-gods who are subservient to Sri Krishna, also are willingly working for the Bhagavathas.

In the fifth, we saw how the sins we committed early to realizing the relationship between Jeevathma and Paramathma vanish like that of a cotton dropped in fire, and how the sins that we may commit unknowingly will run away like water on a lotus leaf with the Krupai of Perumal.

Now going on, for the next 10 Paasurams Aandal wakes up various friends of her and tells a very KEY characteristic of Sri Vaishnava. BHAGAVADHA SAMSLESHAM. பாகவத ஸம்ஸ்லேஷம். Meaning, to be along with Bhagavathas to enjoy the Kalayana Gunas of Perumal.

Meaning:
In this song, Aandal wakes up the young girls who are yet to understand the relationship between them and God (Bhagavath Vishayam/பகவத் விஷயம்), and wants them to go along with them to pray Him early in the morning.

Aandal wakes those who are sleeping still even after Brahma Muhoortham (4am-6am) in order to get ready for the Vrath. But the girls refuse to wake up and asks her to explain how she cliams it is dawn as it is still dark. Aandal tells her the fact that they are awake itself tells that it is dawn. The girls reply saying, you all are always in the thoughts of Krishna and you wont ever sleep. How can I take the fact that you are awake to be dawn>

pullum silambinakaan/புள்ளும்சிலம்பினகாண் - "Hey look, the birds have started leaving the nest in order to find food for their children. They make so much noise at this hour only to tell that we have to get ready for our daily chores, which is to indulge in the thoughts of Krishna" (manathinaal sindhikka/மனத்தினால் சிந்திக்க).

The girls where not satisfied, and say that in Thiruvaayarpaadi, not only the aaichiyargal/ஆய்சியர்கள் but everyone including animals and birds are in the thought of Shri Krishna and they never sleep and so that cannot be a sign for dawn.

pullarayan koyil vellai vilisangin peraravam keetilayo/புள்ளரயன் கோயில் வெள்ளை விளிசங்கின் பேரரவம் கேட்டிலயோ- Aandal describes Perumal as the Swami for the King of Birds, Garuda (Pul/புள்) and says that like in Shri Ramayana, along with Sita it is time when Rama enters Periya Perumal's Sannidhi to offer his Prayers. And like then you can hear the white conch blowing.

The girls wont take that as a sign as well.

pillai eazhundhiraai/பிள்ளாய் எழுந்திராய் - "Hey little girl!! You are new to this Vrath. It is important for all of us to go together as the joy is only in enjoying together with all Bhagavathas, the Kalyana Gunam of Perumal. Like we want to go with you, you should also feel the same", says Aandal explaining why it is important to get early and go together.

The girls wont budge :-)

peeimulai nanju /பேய் முலை நஞ்சு - Aandal tries to wake the girls up by scaring them, "Hey girls! Look! Bhoothanai is coming here in the form of Yashodha to try and kill Krishna".

kallach chakadam/கள்ளச் சகடம் - "Look the wheel, is also an Asura, Chakatasura! and trying to kill our little Krishna!!! Being the followers of Periyaazhwar, and being in the fellow group of Periyaazhwar, shouldnt be you praying for the safety (Mangalasaasanam) and pray him to save himself?!!"

peeymulai nanju undu - kalla chakadam kalakkazhiya kaaloochi/பேய்முலை நஞ்சு உண்டு - கள்ளச் சகடம் கலக்கழிய காலோச்சி - and little Krishna killed Bhoothanai and Chakatasuran in no time, and saved himselves.

veLLath tharavil thuyilamarndha vithinai/வெள்ளத் தரவில் துயிலமர்ந்த வித்தினை - We woke up because of the flood of kindness flowing from Thirupparkadal, as He is sleeping on Thiruvanandhaazhwaan thinking of how to save the Jeevaathmas after killing the demons.

ullathukkondu munivargalum yoogikalum/உள்ளத்துக்கொண்டு முனிவர்களும் யோகிகளும் - The Rishis and Yogis are here in Thiruvaipaadi trying to perform Kainkaryam to Him as they were not able to stay even for a moment in Shri Vaikundam. And He has born here amongst us to be with us. So please wake up.

meLLa eazundhu/மெள்ள எழுந்து - wake up slowly, like a mother who is feeding her baby trying to wake up without disturbing the baby, like Prahalad, who held his heart tight in order to protect the Antharyami when he was rolled from the hill top. Wake up slowly without disturbing Him

ari endra per aravam/அரி என்ற பேரரவம் - and listen to the chanting "Hari Hari" which is loud and clear

uLLam pugundhu kuLirndhu/உள்ளம் புகுந்து குளிர்ந்து - think of the kindness of God, and feel happy and Wake up!!

Adinaayen Ramanuja Dasan.

Day 6, Godha Weaves a Vow(Englsih Poem)

Sixth Song

She coaxes them
The maidens asleep
To realise the awakening around -
“ the birds of morn
That in silence are chirping along

Can you not hear
The hallowed shrillness
Of the white conch that blows
from the aboard of
Garuda ‘s Lord - the king
Of those birds that sing?

Rise from oblivion
Oh girl that rests

To the one who
Sucked away her venom
The wicked Bhoodana’s breasts.
May you know
Crushed He under His feet
That feigned wheel
Which aimed to bring His end.
Cocooned by the Serpent
Rests He in the Milky Ocean above
He is the cause of this very Being
Beheld by sages
In their bosom so dear
‘Hari’ they chant
His name ,
Do you not but hear ?

This name shall reach
Your hearts that sing
To fill succour
Into your depth within.
Oh girl,
Gently awake
Awake ye to this vow today.”

Day 6 - Did you know...

.….that river Godhavari got rid of her taint (papa vimochanam) because of Andal?
In Ramayana, when Ravana carries away Sita, (an incarnation of Bhoodevi), She cries out for help. She calls out to the trees to tell Rama that She is being abducted by Ravana. She pleads the river Godhavari to bear witness to her abduction, and tell Rama to hasten to rescue Her. When Rama came back from "Maricha vatham", he found that Seetha was missing and couldn't get a clue of what happened. He calls out to the river Godhavari and asks if she had any news of Sita. The river Godhavari observes silence, fearing Ravana's wrath. Thus Godhavari acquired a taint (பாவம்) and no one would perform any sacred rituals in her waters. This taint was removed, only when Bhoodevi re-incarnated as the daughter of Periazhvar and was named Godha.

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha:
Dear All,
About a temple at Denkanikottai I would like to share some informtion. I have been to this temple quite a few times since I was in Standard 7. This beautiful town has an ancient temple of Beteraya Swamy(vettaiadiya piran in Tamil),this temple is said to be around 500 years old.The annual car festival of this lord is quite famous around the region, this festival happens generally during the month of march and April. You cannot find more information about this temple otherwise. Following all the SriVaishnava Utsavams, here we can see the people's devotion and the shraddha to perform all the Utsavams. The temple is 24 Kms from Hosur. Please visit if you are in India or you get a chance to come. Kindly excuse as I dont have any picture of the temple as such.
