Godha Stuthi - 13

NaagEsaya: sutanu: PakshiraTa: Katham tE
Jaatha: svayamvarapathi: Purusha: PurANa:
Yevam vidhA samuchitham praNayam bhavathyA:
Samdarsayanthi ParihAsa Gira: SakheenAm

MEANING:
Oh Godhai of the most beautiful and tender limbs! How did it happen that this old man, who sleeps on a bed of snake and has a bird for his transport become the man of Your choice as Your husband? Your dear husband of choice does not even have a proper bed for You; further, if you wish to travel to a destination of Your desire, You have to sit with Him uncomfortably on a bird .You can not go round the town on a procession on foot. You can only use the bird to fly way high up. The worst of it all is that Your husband is an ancient(old) one, when it comes to His age , while You are of tender age. How come You overlooked all these negative factors, while making Your choice of Him as Your future husband? What happened? Thus Your friends tease You.

Meaning:

Bakasuran - An Asura, who took the form of a stork (கொக்கு/kokku), and tried to kill Shri Krishna. Shri Krishna, tore open the mouth of the stork thereby killing Bakasuran.

In the previous Paasuram, there was a praise of Lord Rama. (Sinathinal thennilangai komanai cheTRa/சினத்தினால் தென்னிலங்கை கோமானை செற்ற)

In this song, Aandal praises Shri Krishna as well as Shri Rama.

She praises Shri Krishna, as Krishna is like a down stream for them. Sowlabhyam.

She praises Shri Rama because, Shri Rama did all that he could to rescue Sita, who was imprisoned by Ravana. The girls felt imprisoned, and felt that it is the responsibility of Perumal to come and rescue them as well.

The Sampradhaya Meaning: Unlike those who take the Bhakthi Marg, with the aid of Krma and Gyana, those who take His Gyana and Shakthi as the route, with the aid of their AGYANA(knowledgelessness) and ASHAKTHI(powerless) are the ones who are the loved ones of Perumal.

Aandal, relates herself and the Gopikas as the one who is the later in the above. Like Sita, who inspite of the power within Herself to kill Ravana, did not use it but was waiting for Shri Rama to come and rescue her.

piratti - swashakthiyai vittaL; dhroupathi - lajjaiyai vittal - thirukkaNNamangaiaaNdaan - swavyapaaraththai vittan - Shrivachana Booshanam (83)

keerthimai paadi/கீர்த்திமை பாடி - To sing the praise of Shri Rama...

Ravanan fell prey for Shri Rama's Courage.
Soorpanaga, the sister of Ravana fell prey to Shri Rama's beauty
Vibheeshana, the brother of Ravana fell prey to Shri Rama's Mercy (Sheelam/ஶீலம்)

Thus the girls were singing His praise thus and continue to go to the place earmarked for the Vrath.

velli eazhundhu viyazhamuzhangiTRu/வெள்ளி எழுந்து வியாழமுழங்கிற்று - The signs that tells that it is morning.

puLLum silambinakaaN/புள்ளும் சிலம்பினகாண் - The birts are flocking out to look for food. Again this is a sign that it is well after dawn and into morning. Telling these signs Aandal, tries to wake up the girl.

poodharikkaNNinaai/போதரிக்கண்ணினாய் - The one with beautiful eyes, which makes everyone come to your place to look at them and enjoy the beauty of the eyes.

paavaai nii nannaaLaal/பாவாய் நீ நன்னாளால் - Such a wonderful girl, who has all the qualities and characteristics of a noble and slender women, please wake up on this wonderful day on which we all will be meeting Shri Krishna.

kallam thavirndhu kalandhu/கள்ளம் தவிர்ந்து கலந்து - By staying back and thinking that Krishna will come to you as you have such a beautiful eyes, do not stay back and leave such a thought and do come along with all of us, so we can enjoy Him as a group.

Here Aandal emphasises the fact that Krishnanubhavam is not to be enjoyed alone but along with all other Adiyars/Bhaagavathas, which is when it tastes even better, and which is when Shri Krishna also feels more happier.

kuLLakkuLira kutaindhu niirraadaadhe/குள்ளக்உளிர குடைந்து நீராடாதே - Dont be sleeping, wake up and take a wonderful bath and get ready to go to the Vrath!!

Day 13, Godha Weaves a Vow(English Poem)

‘Bahasura’ He slew
That appeared a crane in guise
Uproot the evil did He
The clan of‘ Ravana’, the demon in rise.
We sing of valour,
His glories galore,
Those maidens at vow
Who have reached there before
The mighty sun has risen to sight
Letting the moon to rest
For a while away from light
The birds have begun to fetch for food
Their flutter and noise, that you may hear.
Maiden of such eyes
Prettier than the beautiful flowers
The dainty one indeed
In this precious time
Of hope to unite
With ‘Krishna’
The vision of every sight
Lost in sleep so calm, ye dame
As if you are caught
In ‘ Krishna’s’ tricks of enthralling game
That you still rest on bed
And not join us in our bath
To rid of pains
That lay in our body’s path
Our thoughts are struck
With wonder oh Girl.

2009 Srirangam Andal Alankaaram

Day 13 Recipe - Appam

Ingredients:

Atta flour : 1 cup
Rice flour : 1/2 cup
Jaggery : 1 1/2 cup
Banana : Medium size 1
Elachi
Water

Method:
  • Mix Rice flour, Atta flour into a thick batter (thicker than idli flour consistency).
  • Mash Banana, mix with the flour
  • Buy good quality of jaggery, add to the flour and grind in the mixie to get good thick batter.
  • Add elachi
  • In a pan, add oil and with a small spoon pour the batter slowly in to the oil and fry the appam (fry in a medium flame). Turn to the other side when you get a nice light brown colour. Take it out when it is done.

(If the jaggery has lots of dust, pour little water then filter it. So, you have to reduce the amount of water that you add to the flour to make the batter, since jaggery itself has some moisture)

Day 13 - Did you know...

…..the association of Ramanuja with “Undhu madha kalitran” paasuram [paasuram 18 of Thiruppavai]?
One day , Ramanuja was going from door to door on barefoot, reciting Thiruppavai on the occasion of his Bhiksha collection for his one meal of the day in Thirukkottiyur. Because of the sacredness of Thiruppavai and his reverence for Andal , he would not wear any Padhukas on such occcasions . As he reached the door of his Acharya , Thirukkottiyur nambi , he was reciting the paasuram, "UndhumadhakaLiRRan OdAtha thOL valiyan". When Ramanuja was reciting the section "SenthAmarai kaiyAl seerar vaLaiOlippa vandhu thiravAi." (meaning : to open the door with Her lotus like hands), Athoozhaai Piratti, the daughter of Ramanuja's Acharya, Periya Nambigal, opened the door with her bangles jingling. This extraordinary coincidence made Ramanuja faint since Ramanuja felt it was Nappinnai Piraatti Herself opening the door. Such is the greatness of Ramanuja's reverence for Thiruppavai and Andal. We recite twice to signify this incident.
