Meaning:

In this Paasuram, Aandal, asks Shri Krishna, to come out of His bedorom and walk towards them so that they can enjoy the beauty in His walk, and sit on the Throne to listen to them.

In the rainy seasons, there is little in the forest to be done as it is wet everywhere and water is stagnated everywhere. So during this rainy season Lions doze off in their dens which are situated in mountains along with lioness. Also the kings return to their homes during the rainy season and forget the hatred between other kingdoms just like the tracks vanish because of running water during rainy season.

In Shri Ramayana, we see that Sugreeva, after being helped by Shri Rama to kill his brother Vaali, went back to the kingdom as rainy season arrived, while Shri Rama stayed back. Sugreeva engaged himself in the wealth and lust and forgot about Shri Rama, only to be reminded by Lakshman later.

Like the lion which comes out of its sleep from the cave in the mountain, stretching itself out of its stiffness due to sleeping by folding its body parts, shaking all the parts of its body, and stretching and roaring, Hey Krishna the one who walks like a Lion, like a Rishabam(ox, kaalai/காளை), like a Tiger, like an Elephant, please walk outside of your bedroom so that we can see that wonderful sight of you walking.

Today, in Srirangam, we can see the same beauty that Aandal saw in Namperumal's walk when he comes out of His kovil.

Aandal, also meant that the sight of a Lion walking out of its den, with red angry eyes will ring death bell in the hearts of its enemies. Like on seeing the angry red eyes, Sishupalan, Ravanan, Hiranyakashipu and the likes feared. However, the same red eyes, look like freshly blossomed Lotus to the eyes of Bhagavathas.

Hey Krishna! The one with the magetic looks and characters of a lion, and at the same time as sweet and lovely and tender as that of a flower, while we are here in front of your room waiting to see you, please come out of your room (un kovil poondharuLi/உன் கோயில் போந்தருளி), please be seated on the throne and provide us the thing for which we came to you - Moksha.

Godha Stuthi - 23

archyam samarchaya niyamai: nigama prasUnai:
Naatham thvayA KamalayA cha samEyivAmsam
Matha: chiram niravisan nijamAdhirAjyam
MaanyA-Manu prabruthayOapi mahIkshithasthE
MEANING:
Oh Loka MaathA GodhE! How did the great kings like Manu and MaandhAthA rule
their kingdoms with joy for many, many years? It was possible because of Your grace.
You are the amsam of BhUmi Devi. RanganAthan stands in union with You and Sri
Devi. These kings worshipped well RanganAthan with both of His consorts (ubhaya-
NaacchimAr) with various niyamams and attained the boon of long life as emperors.

Day 23, Godha Weaves a Vow (English Poem)

"Amidst the monsoon droplets
Within the mountain caves
Lost in deep tangle
Is the Lion and its mate
And with the longing realized
He, the lion shakes himself up
Wriggling his body
And raising his hair
He stretches and roars
To step out of its mountain cave

Just as this lion rising from
Its deepest desire

Oh Krishna
As soft as the ‘kaya’ flowers
Tread out from your abode
To place yourself on the waiting throne
May you then
See through us
To reach our call at your temple door
Have mercy
Oh Krishna ".

The maidens sing in praise
His name
And wish him length of life
While offering their longings at vow.

2009-2010 Srirangam Andal Alankaaram

Kolam 23 -

Day 23 - Did you know...

.....how Andal surpasses Periyazwar and other Azwars?

1) “anru ivvulagam alanthaai adi potri” - அன்று இவ் உலகம் அளந்தாய்! அடி போற்றிPerumAL was the most beloved one to PeriAzhwAr and when AzhwAr saw PerumAL appearing in this samsAram, his anxiety grew and in order that no evil things should touch/affect PerumAL ( who is now in danger !! ) , AzhwAr started performing the mangaLAsAsanam - "pallAndu pallAndu ..." very esoteric indeed to comprehend !! But AndAL surpasses even all these things. AndAL performs mangaLAsAsanams like "anRu ivvulagam aLandhAi adi pOttri , chenranguth thenillangai chettRAI thiRal pOttri pOttri ....pOttri ...". Long back, PerumAL took trivikrama avatAram. But AndAL is feeling very badly now, that she missed a most glorious pastime and performs the mangaLAsAsanam for that now. Similarly, for the avatAra leelAs of rAma, krishna and the like also, AndAL started performing the mangaLAsAsanam.

2) “Kutreval enagalai kollamal pogathu” - குற்றேவல் எங்களைக் கொள்ளாமல் போகாதுNot only this, AndAL goes far and way ahead in this thiruppAvai , by even reminding the Supreme Lord Sriman NArAyaNA after duly waking Him up and making Him sit in the throne ,that, all these jIvAtmAs belong to Him and it is His duty to protect them !!! - in a way teaching the Lord Himself that He should grant the kainkarya sAmrAjyam of moksham to those who surrender to Him. While all other AzhwArs had their " mayarvaRa madhi nalam (blemishless knowledge) " blessed by PerumAL, in thiruppAvi, AndAL is giving that "mayarvaRa madhi nalam" to PerumAL Himself !!
