Method:
- Cook the rice and the moong dhall in the pressure cooker with water (1 : 3 ).
- Add water to jaggery, get the syrup. Filter it to remove the dirt.
- In a pan, start making jaggery syrup in a medium flame. Once it starts boiling (Approx 10 mts), drop a little amount in a small bowl of water. It should come out like a ball.
- Then add the cooked rice and moong dhall to the syrup, add ghee and mix well for 5- 8 minutes.
- Add the Elachi, Nutmeg(Jadhikkai) powder, Edible Camphor, fried Cashew Nuts, Raisins to the rice and mix well. This method will give you a tasty Sarkarai Pongal like you get in temples.

ReplyDeleteThis song is so beautiful , look at Andal's wish to offer Thirmaaliruncholai Perumal 100 Thadas(vessels) , I have not seen the actual size till now... of Akkara vadisal
and the way she offers by calling Perumal(Eru Thiruvudaiyai) and also asking him to take /accept the offering NOW !!
Further, as we do it for kids, she raises Perumal's wish to have many more such vessels forever in future also indicating that she will keep doing this everlasting Kainkaryam with the summing up verse which just pierces our heart "Adiyen Manaththe vanthu nerpadile" !!!
By the way today was just Great for us too! Chakkarai Pongal was very tasty, made with organic vellam ( just a different name tag !!!) I generally get lousy vellam in Bangalore and this one is like Namba Voor Vellam ( thick, dark brown colour, rich aroma - with an added shaping to the vellam mould- conical, in the piece I bought, and everything went off so smoothly driven by Godha and Perumal.
This is indeed a day of E - Koodarai Valli and E Koodi Irunthu Kulirnthom Naal for us.
