Day 18 - Did you know...

.....the various reasons that account for Ramanujar being known as “Thiruppavai jeeyar” ?

Sri Ramanuja was given the title of Thiruppavai Jeeyar by his Acharya , Periya Nambi . Ramanujar earned this title because

(1) of his intense attachment to the uplifting thoughts enshrined in Thiruppavai Composition :
Thiruvarangatthu amudhanar , a contemporary of Ramanuja and the author of Ramanuja Nootranthadhi salutes Ramanuja's reverence for AndAL this way:
" Arangar Mowli soozginra maalai soodikkodutthavaL thol aruLAl vazhinra IrAmAnusanennum muniyE . "
“அரங்கர் மௌலி சூழ்கின்ற மாலையைச் சூடிக்கொடுத்தவள் தொல்லருளால் வாழ்கின்ற வள்ளல் இராமாநுசனென்னும் மாமுனியே”
Here Amudanar states that Ramanuja's life was sustained by the grace of Soodikkoduttha NaacchiyAr and Her hymns were Ramanuja's life-breath. We recite this verse twice.

(2) of his practise of frequent recitation of the verses of Thiruppavai especially during the times of Bhiksha seeking. When Ramanuja fainted upon the coincidence of hearing the bangles (of Athoozhaai) jingling (For details, refer Day 13 - Did you know?) while he was reciting “undu madha kalitran”, Periya nambigal came and sat next to Ramanuja, gently patted him to awaken him and said with an understanding and affectionate tone, "You are fully enjoying undhu madakalitran aren't you Thiruppavai Jeeyar” (the scholarly teacher of Thiruppavai)? Ever since then, one of the titles for Sri Ramanuja has been Thiruppavai Jeeyar.

(3) of his reluctance to perform upanyasams on Thiruppavai as opposed to Nammazhwar's and other Azhwar's works. This is an indication of his special affection and reverence for AndaL. Ramanuja felt himself to be not pure enough to comment on Naachiyar’s aruliccheyal (அருளிச்செயல்). Such is the magnitude and quality of Acharya Ramanuja's reverence for Soodikkoduttha Sudarkodi and her aruliccheyal.
