Meaning

In this Paasuram, Aandal addresses those who are interested to be sub serviant to God, in his servitude, and those who have taken HIM as the path(marg/மார்கம்) to attain HIM, and tells them what they should be doing and what they should not be doing.

vaiyaththu vaazveerkaal/வைய்யத்து வாழ்வீர்காள்: As explained in the earlier Paasuram also, the Kalyana Gunangal of Sriman Narayanan is only enjoyed fully in this earth. Kalyana Gunangal like, Vaathsalyam, Sowsheelyam, Sowlabhyam are not to be see in Paramapadham as there is no one who commits mistakes there. It is in earth where we make mistakes repeatedly and it is when Perumal can show his Kalyana Gunangal.

Even Nithyasooris are born in earth to enjoy these Kalyana Gunangal of Perumal, which they rarely get to see in Parmapadham. So these Kalyana Gunangal flourish only in this earth, and so Aandal is praising earth and keeping it a step ahead of Paramapadham.

seiyum kirisaikaL keleero/செய்யும் கிரிசைகள் கேளீரோ : Do all those things that are requird to do in this boologam/earth, listen

paarkadal - neiyunnom paalunnom/பார்கடல் - நெய்யுண்ணோம் பாலுண்ணோம் : While he is sleeping on the Aadhiseshan in Paramapadham, even when Naichimaargal are near Him, he is always in constant thought on how he can get Jeevathma to come to him. When GOD is disturbed by the fact that he is worried when he can get Jeevaathmaas near him, we should reciprocate by waking up early in Brahma Muhoortham (4am) and take bath and be ready to meet him.

While we are about to enjoy to our heart's content the sweet nectar of Perumal's kainkaryam, we do not need these earthly items, ghee and milk.

maiittu naam eazhudhom malarittu naam mudiyom/மையிட்டு நாம் எழுதோம் மலரிட்டு நாம் முடியோம்: We wont decorate ourselves with these wordly pleasures while what we are longing is for eternal pleasure - Moksha

seiyaadhana - uiyumaarenni/செய்யாதன - உய்யுமாரெண்ணி - We will not do anything our forefathers have not done. By this, we say that we will only follow those that are practiced and show cased by our forefathers in an effort to attain Moksha and be a servant to GOD.

We will not think evil of anyone, as thinking evil is holding that to one's heart, which is where Perumal resides as "Antharyaami/அந்தர்யாமி".

We will enjoy the sweet nectar of Perumal's Kalyana Gunangal, practice what our elders have shown us by their practices, and will preach the same to others who are interested attaining moksha, and knowing the practices.

uiyumaarenNi ugandhu/உய்யுமாரெண்ணி உகந்து - In those wonderful thoughts of attaining Moksha, enjoy the feeling and perform the Vrathat.

  1. Two questions:
    1. Why is the "பதபதார்தம்" or word by word meaning jumbled and not in the same order as in the paasuram?
    2. Why do you say "adinaayen" and not "adiyen"? Initially I thought it was a typo, but since you have now repeated it a few times, I am thinking there is a reason for the way it is represented. Most of us haven't heard that expression. Can you please explain

  2. 1) Padhapadhartham is not jumbled. It is the way written in the way that it has to be understood - called Anvayakramam/அன்வயக்ரம்ம்.

It is easy to understand the meaning of the paasruam as explained by our aacharyas in the anvayakramam as the paasuram is written following grammer rules, the words could be front to back or vice versa to satisfy the grammer rules.

    2) How do I explain this? Well, Sri Vaishnavites call themselves அடியேன்/adiyen, as they understand that they are சேஷபூதர்கள்/seshaboothas.

    Nammazhwar in Thiruvaimozhi 3-3-1 says
    Ozhivil kaalamellam udanai manni
    Vazuvila adimai seiya vendum naam

    ஒழிவில் காலமெல்லம் உடனாய் மன்னி
    வழுவிலா அடிமை செய்ய வேண்டும் நாம்

    In Thiruvaimozhi 3-3-4 nammazhwar says
    Neesaneen nirai ondrumilen
    நீசனேன் நிறை ஒன்றுமிலேன்

    In Thiruvaimozhi 3-7-10 azhwar says
Adiyar adiyaar tham adiyaar adiyaar thamakku
    Adiyaar adiyaar tham adiyaar adiyongale

    அடியார் அடியார் தம் அடியார் அடியார் தமக்கு
    அடியார் அடியார் தம் அடியார் அடியோங்களே

Azhwar puts himselves 7 times lower in this, and in 3-3-4, He says he is such an undeserving person with nothing worthy of telling about Himself.

Also, once in Thiruvarangam, a dog entered the temple premises. The Koil Bhattars(priests), performed a punyojanam for the temple and washed the entire temple. On seeing this Parasara Bhattar said to Periya Perumal, if you are cleaning yourselves so much because of a dog entering into the temple, I am not sure what you will have to do get rid of this impurity that I bring in every day by visiting your temple!!!

Azhwar and Paraasara Bhattar, the one who has been Mayarmara Madhinalam Arulappetravar, if He thinks he is such, Adinayen feels that it is not appropriate to use the same word as that used by Alwar but to use something much lower.

In Shashtra, Dog is considered to be the lowest being fit for nothing. And so used the term Adinaayen. This is also a customary and not coined by me. It is usual in Sampradhayam to call oneselves Adinaayen – One being lower than that of a dog.

  4. In Thiruppavai, Aandal had undertaken a Vrath/Nonbu/நோன்பு. And in the 2nd Paasuram she explains the dos and donts during that period.

In that when she said neiyunnom paalunnom/நெய்யுண்ணோம் பாலுண்ணோம், what she said was key items in the staple food for the Aayars (people who rear cows).

The main purpose of the nonbu is to attain Emberuman Samslesham (Moksha). By telling that we will not eat ghee or drink milk, what Aandal conveys is that we will not indulge in the “earthly affairs” which are “blocks” to reach His Holy feet.

Thallathakkathu/தள்ளத்தக்கது, should be avoided and what she has highlighted here is to tell us that we shoud indulge more in things that are Kollaththakkathu/கொள்ளத்தக்கது. The intent of the Paasuram is thus to direct us towards understanding what are Thallathakkathu and what are Kollathakkathu.

Anything that we do should help us to get to HIS LOTUS FEETAnything that BLOCKS us from getting there should be avoided.

In the paasuram, Aandal had told the dos and donts that one should practice during the Vrath in order to complete it successfully.

For Mumukshus/முமுக்ஷுக்களுக்கு, there are a set of dos and donts which you can understand from Poorvacharya Granthas like, Mumukshupadi, Sri Vachana Bhooshanam, Aacharya Hrudhayam, Thathva Thrayam etc.

Sri Vaishnava Sampradhayam do not also give importance to Sashtras but give lot more importance to Azhwar’s Arulicheyal (Divya Prabhandham). What we should do are clearly explained by our Poorvacharyas in many granthas, and what we should be concerned is how we can do the best for the Aathma to attain Moksha.

    These incidentals do not matter.

I might not have answered directly to your question as the question itself, but I used your question to clarify a bit more about Sri Vaishnava Sampradhayam.

    Hope it clarified!!
