.….why Periyazwar cites “Chakkaram” (disc) first in Thiruppallandu and Andal cites “Sangu” (conch) first in Thiruppavai ?
Periyazwar : “Chakkaram” / disc :
Andal : “Sangu” / Conch :
வடிவார் சோதி வலத்துறையும் சுடராழியும் பல்லாண்டு
படைபோர் புக்கு முழங்கும் அப்பாஞ்ச சன்னியமும் பல்லாண்டே
Periyazwar sings Pallandu circumambulating (ப்ரதக்ஷ்ணம்) perumal (பொங்கும் பரிவாலே பெரியாழ்வார் பெருமாளைச் சுற்றிச் சுற்றிப் பல்லாண்டு பாடுகிறார்). So when Azwar makes the round clockwise, he sees “Chakkaram” in the right hand first and then the “Sangu” in the left hand and praises them in that order.Andal : “Sangu” / Conch :
சங்கொடு சக்கரம் ஏந்தும் தடக்கையன்
பங்கையக் கண்ணானைப் பாடேலோ ரெம்பாவாய் [Thiruppavai paasuram : 14]
The conch holds a special place. It never leaves Perumal to do it’s job. It either rests on Perumal’s shoulder or gets kissed by HIS red coral lips (and hence tasting HIS atharaamrutham - அதராம்ருதம்) when it is called for duty. But the disc has to leave Perumal to perform it’s duty. So Andal is all in praise for the conch and wishes to be with Perumal all the time just like the conch. Hence She cites the conch first followed by the disc.

ReplyDeleteAnother reason why Andal could have sung about Paanchajanyam first could be because that is what She sees first - as She is to the left of PerumAL in all the temples... (except at Govindaraja Perumal as was mentioned in a previous section of Did you know...)
ReplyDeleteDo you mean Thayar is always to the left of Perumal in all the temples? Then why do we (ladies) stand to the right of their husband? Can anyone clarify?
