Day 17 - Did you know...

.....that Andal reveals the meaning of "Narayana" in the verse "Katru karavai kanangal pala karanthu" [paasuram :11] of Thiruppavai?

The direct meaning of this verse will be "Various groups of Cows being milked by one person”.
There are two meanings for "Narayana" per the etymology. Let us see one of them.

Meaning (in Sanskrit):
ra - () that which has an end...
nara - (நர) that which does NOT have an end.. (Nithya vasthu / Living entites having NO end)
Naara - (நார) group of "nara"s..(Nithya vasthukkal).
Naaraa - (நாரா) various groups of "nara"s..(Nithya vasthukkalin koottam)
ayana - (அயன) resting place

Therefore, one meaning of Narayana is 'resting place for all various groups of living entities'.(Nithya vasthukkalin koottathiruku pugalidam).

To compare:
nara - katru karavai (cow - Jeevathma)
Naara - katru karavai kanangal (group of cows - Jeevathmas )
Naaraa - katru karavai kanangal pala.. (various groups of cows - Jeevathmas, Nithya soorigal, Vishvaksenar and so on)
ayana - resting place (milked by one person)

Thus this verse, with it’s inner meaning, also says that Narayana is 'resting place for all various groups of living entities'.
