Day 18 - undhu madhakaLiTRu - உந்து மதகளிற்று

உந்து மதகளிற்ற னோடாத தோள்வலியன்
நந்தகோ பாலன் மருமகளே நப்பின்னாய்
கந்தங் கமழும் குழலீ கடைதிறவாய்
வந்தெங்குங் கோழி யழைத்தனகாண் மாதவிப்
பந்தல்மேல் பல்கால் குயிலினங்கள் கூவினகாண்
பந்தார் விரலியுன் மைத்துனன் பேர்பாடச்
செந்தா மரைக்கையால் சீரார் வளையொலிப்ப
வந்து திறவாய் மகிழ்ந்தேலோ ரெம்பாவாய்.


Introduction:

In the last Paasuram, the Gopikas woke up Shri Nandhagopan, Yasodhai and Shri Balaraman in the status as that of an Aacharyan. In this Paasuram, Aandal is trying to wake up Nappinnai Piratti.

Padhapadhaartham - பதபதார்த்தம் - Word by Word:

matham undhu kaLiTRan/மதம் உந்து களிற்றன் - The elephant which secrets fluids from its its forehead

ootaatha thooL valiyan/ஓடாத தோள் வலியன் - The one who has the power to fight in a battlefield and not retreat

nandha goopaalan/நந்த கோபாலன் - Shri Nandhagopan's

marukmakaLee/மருமகளே - Daughter In Law

nappinnaay/நப்பின்னாய் - The one with the name Nappinnai

gandham kamazhum kuzhalii/கந்தம் கமழும் குழலீ - The one with long hairs which has a beautiful fragrance

kadai thiRavaay/கடை திறவாய் - Please open the door

koozhi engum vandhu/கோழி எங்கும் வந்து - Hens come in from all the directions

azhaiththana kaaN/அழைத்தன காண் - They are calling out!

maathavi pandhal meel/மாதவி பந்தல் மேல் - In their nests made out of KURUKKAHTHI plants

kuyil inangnal/குயில் இனங்கள் - The Kookoo birds

pal kaal/பல் கால் - Many times

kuuvina kaaN/கூவின காண் - are also calling out

pandhu aar virali/பந்து ஆர் விரலி - The one with the ball in her hands (which she used to beat Shri Krishna in a game)

un maiththunan peer paata/உன் மைத்துனன் பேர் பாட - To sing the praise of your Lord

siir aar vaLai olippa/சீர் ஆர் வளை ஒலிப்ப - To hear the noise of the bangles in your slender hand

vandhu/வந்து - please come

sem thaamarai kaiyaal/செம் தாமரை கையால் - with the hands that are red like a lotus

makizhndhu thiRavaay/மகிழ்ந்து திறவாய் - Please open the door happily

Meanings:

This Paasuram highlights the Sri Vaishnava Sampradhaya which beleives in surrendering to Sriman Narayana with the presence of and with the recommendation of Periya Piratti. There are so many instances in Shri Ramayana which gives strength to this philosophy.

We all know the crow which inflicted harm to Sita, was chased by Shri Rama's Brahma Asthra only for the crow to finally fall in Shri Rama's feet with the help of Sita and attained Kshama.

We all know that Surpanaka, who desired Rama without Sita, got her ears and nose cut.

Vibheeshana, Sugreeva and Hanuman, got the blessings of Sita, before they were apporved and accepted by Shri Rama.

Ravana, who did not hear to Sita's advice, died miserably in the hands of Rama.

Throughout Shri Ramayana, Rama only killed someone in the absence of Sita. While Sita was with Him, He always showered his kindness.

இவள் தாயாய் இவர்கள் க்லேசம் பொருக்கமாட்டாதே அவனுக்குப் பத்நியாய் இனிய விஷயமாயிருக்கையாலே கண்னழிவற்ற புருஷகாரம். (128) முமுக்ஷுப்படி

So from these we see that it is important to first get the blessings of Periya Piraattiyar before surrendering to Sriman Narayana. The coming three Paasurams convey this important Sri Vaishnava belief.

In Shri Krishna Avathar, Nappinnai Piratti is portrayed as the Queen of Shri Krishna. Nappinnai is a Tamizh name. The equivalent of this in Sanskrit is, NeeLa/நீளா, as we see from our Poorvacharyas commentaries.

During Krishna Avathar, Nappinnai Piratti was born to Shri Kumbar. Instead of addressing her as Kumbar's Daughter, in this Paasuram, Aandal addresses her as Nandhagopalan Marumagale/நந்தகோபாலன் மருமகளே!!! The reason, for women folks the relationship at their in-laws house is much more stronger than the relationship with their parents house.

We also see that in Shri Ramayana, when Hanuman converses with Sita in Ashoka Vanam, Sita calls herself as "Dasaratha's Daugher In Law"! (snushaa thasaratha syaaham/ஸ்நுஷா தசரத ஸ்யாஹம்).

On this basis is why it is rendered as Nandhagopalan's daugher in law.

Here Nandhagopalan is praised as a person who has the courage to control a wild elephant which oozes fluids in its forehead and is thus destructive. (undhu mathakaLiTRan oodaadha thooLvaliyan/உந்துமதகளிற்றன் ஓடாத தோள்வலியன்). Another meaning for this line is - The one who owns elephants which ooze fluids and are angry. The third meaning is - The person who is as powerful as an elephant which is ooze fluids and is angry. Thus Nandhagopalan's prowess is praised here and Nappinnai Piratti is addressed as the daughter in law of such a powerful person.

Samprdahaya Meaning: As Nandhagopalan is considered in the earlier Paasuram as Aacharyan, here he is praised as someone who has won the five senses (which are wild elephants), with the help of (thol valiyan/தோள்வலியன்) the Gyanam

(Nappinnaai/நப்பின்னாய்) Shri Krishna, won the battle with seven bisons (Sampradhaya bisons are : Kama, Krodha, Moha, Madha, Mathsalya, Loba, Mathsalyam). Aacharya Purshas also have won these, and Nappinnai is equated to an Aacharya here.

(gandham kamazhum kuzhalii/கந்தம் கமழும் குழலீ) Hey the one with beautiful frangrance from the long hair. Aandal, calls upon Nappinnai Piratti and tries to wake her up. She asks her to open the door (kadai thiravaai/கடை திறவாய்)

Again in this Paasuram also, all the hints which tells that it is early in the morning is explained.

(vandhengum koozhi azhaithana kaan/வந்தெங்கும் கோழி அழைத்தன காண்)
(maadhavi pandhal mel palkaal kuyilinangal kuuvina kaan/மாதவி பந்தல் மேல் பல்கால் குயிலினங்கள் கூவின காண்) These are happenings early in the morning. Hens Cluck, kookoos sings!! Telling such signs, Aandal tries to wake up Nappinnai Piratti.

(pandhaar virali/பந்தார் விரலி) Hey Nappinnai Piratti! The one with the flower ball in one hand and Shri Krishna on the other!! Just like the ball, which is dependent and subservient to you, we are also here to be dependent and subservient to you. Just like you have the ball in one hand and Krishna in the other, do have us as well along with you so we also enjoy being with Shri Krishna.

(seeraar valai olippa/சீரார் வளை ஒலிப்ப) With the noise made by your bangles that are there in your slender hands (un maithunan per paada/உன் மைத்துனன் பேர் பாட) to sing the praise of Shri Krishna, (vandhu katai thiravaai/வந்து கடை திறவாய்) please come and open the door.
